Seán Potts: Funeral of former Chieftains musician to take place (BBC News)
The funeral of Seán Potts, who was a founding member of Irish band The Chieftains, is due to take place in his native Dublin later on Friday.
Potts was best known for playing the tin whistle with the world-renowned traditional music group that he helped form in Dublin in 1962.
He left The Chieftains in 1979 and later became the honorary president of Na Píobairí Uilleann (association of uilleann pipers).
'Greatly missed' The association has offered its "sincere condolences to his family and to his many friends".
"Seán worked tirelessly all of his life to promote the uilleann pipes and Irish traditional music," it said in a statement.
"He will be greatly missed by the staff, board and members of Na Píobairí Uilleann."
Potts started his musical career as a member of the Irish traditional band, Ceoltóirí Chualann.
After forming a friendship with fellow whistle-player Paddy Moloney in the 1950s, the pair helped form The Chieftains, a group that Moloney still leads.
To date, the group has toured the world, recorded 58 albums, and won six Grammy awards.
Potts, who also played percussion instruments such as the bones and the bodhrán, left The Chieftains after struggling with the pressures of touring.
The band's website says his departure was prompted by a "particularly hair raising episode when flying through a storm in 1979 during their North American tour".
He later formed his own traditional music group - Bakerswell, which also toured the US.
Potts is survived by his wife, Bernie, and his four children.
His funeral service is due to take place at 11:30 GMT at the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians on Navan Road, Dublin.
After Requiem Mass he will be buried at Dardistown Cemetery.

Moate whistler wins Fleadh
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Moate musician Audrey Ní Mhurcú has won the slow airs competition on the tin whistle for over 18s at this year’s All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Cavan on Saturday, August 18. She also managed a very creditable second place in the whistle competition for the same age group in the Breffni capital.
Over the three days of the weekend 3,000 musicians competed in the 61st Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.
It was estimated that around 300,000 people visited Cavan for the Fleadh, including a special visit by President Michael D Higgins.
The week leading up to the Fleadh included Scoil Éigse, which comprised a week of workshops and classes of Irish traditional music, song, and dance.
The Fleadh itself, one of the premier cultural events in Europe, is regarded as the biggest traditional music festival in the world.
This was the third year in a row the Fleadh had been held in Cavan, however next year it will be a little further north, as it is to be held in Derry from August 12-18 in 2013.
“Each year, the Fleadh provides a meeting place for those who carry on the great traditions of playing and cherishing our music, songs, and dance,” said president of Comhaltas Ceoltiri Éireann, Vince Jordan.
“It was delightful to see so many young people at the festival this year proving that the passion for traditional culture, song, dance, and Irish language is as strong as ever,” he said.

Hundreds at writer Binchy's funeral
(Photo credit: Wikipedia)The life, love, talent and generosity of acclaimed best-selling novelist Maeve Binchy have been remembered at her funeral.The worlds of the arts, journalism and politics joined forces to pay tribute to Ireland's national treasure, who died on Monday.
Her husband, writer Gordon Snell, brother William and sister Joan led hundreds of mourners including Oscar-winning actress Brenda Fricker, who starred in the screen versions of some of Binchy's books.
Father William Stuart told the congregation in her native Dalkey in south Dublin each had their own memory of the 72-year-old storyteller, saying in his homily: "There isn't a person here or beyond here who cannot recall her infectious personality."

(Photo credit: The Library of Congress)Two kinds of Celtic music — domestic and imported — were on display last night during a concert at the Meadowvale Theatre.Fiona Cuthill and Stevie Lawrence, two veteran performers from Scotland who are in the midst of a North American tour promoting their new album, A Cruel Kindness, provided the imported Celtic, traditional folk music that is popular around the world.
Cuthill and Lawrence's new CD is nominated as Best Traditional Album for Scotland's national music awards.
David Leask, a native of Scotland who lives in Port Credit, provided the domestic portion of the show.
You can take the boy out of Scotland, but you can never take Scotland out of the boy.
“I think it influences my melodies,” he said before the show. “People have said that. It’s something I can’t get away from, whether it’s from your ma and dad sitting you on their knee as a child singing Coulter’s Candy.”
Leask's was accompanied by Sean O’Connor (flute, tin whistle, saxophone) and Steve Didunyk (piano and accordion).
